During the war, Thatch met Benjamin Hornigold, Edward Kenway, and Charles Vane.

Little is known of his early years until the War of the Spanish Succession in 1701, when he served as a privateer for the Royal Navy in the Caribbean. Edward Thatch was likely born in Bristol, England, in 1680.
